First of all, I've done it a handful of times pretty much every week thus far in the 2014 season. I haven't done it through bias, agenda or stupidity. I've done it out of necessity. As much as I would like to -- especially last week -- I can't just skip numbers, say, six through 12 in the rankings.
But, man, few teams have really deserved a lot of praise to this point in the season.
Put it this way, how many teams can we safely trust are good baseball teams right now?
The Bay Area teams and the Tigers? Yes. No question. The Brewers to this point definitely deserve to be in the conversation, as do the Rockies -- though there are sustainability questions with each.
The Braves? Probably, but they've been awful in the past two weeks when they weren't playing the Cubs, and it's hard to put lots of trust in that offense to consistently produce.
The Orioles lead the AL East, but have a losing record against teams over .500, and a negative run differential. The Yankees can't be trusted with their pitching staff injuries and overall fragile roster. The Red Sox have good potential moving forward but haven't been great overall.
The Marlins were a great story for a bit, but they were overperforming, are embarrassingly bad on the road and in all likelihood just lost one of baseball's best pitchers for the season.
The Nationals have potential but battle inconsistency and injuries. The Angels are similar and we could throw the Dodgers and Cardinals in here, too, though I'd argue the latter two have higher upsides. The ability vs. trustworthiness varies, of course, but it's hard to trust any of the four with confidence right now while also allowing for any of them to get hot later.
The Mariners have put together good stretches, but do truly good teams lose eight games in a row? It's fair to say no. The Rangers have lost 11 of their past 16, a stretch including an assortment of embarrassing blowout losses.
Mets, Royals, Blue Jays? It's hard to come up with better than "well, they don't suck."
I just named every single team in baseball that is either at or above .500. That's a pretty low bar for examining which teams we can truly trust as good teams in the middle of May.
So when looking below, if you want to tell me that I have Team X and Team Y ranked too high, I probably agree. I really only believe six teams deserve to be ranked in the top 10 -- maybe even 15 -- right now and I'm only strongly confident in four of them staying there the entire season.
I should also note that there aren't many truly bad teams, either, so the amoeba in the middle is what causes such drastic rises or drops by some teams in the Power Rankings each week.
